Loyalty Development
American Airlines adds cash-and-miles flight bookings for AAdvantage members
Development analysis
What changed, why it matters, and what leaders should watch.
What changed
American Airlines announced on October 2 that eligible AAdvantage members will be able to combine cash and miles when booking flights through aa.com and its app as the feature rolls out in the coming weeks. During checkout, members will use a slider to select from available cash-and-miles combinations, with the trip cost updating to reflect the selection.
Loyalty and rewards implications
American is making its loyalty currency usable at more price points, which can reduce the all-or-nothing barrier of an award redemption and increase the perceived utility of an existing balance. Banks and credit unions can apply the same principle by offering transparent partial-redemption choices for valuable member needs, while clearly disclosing the effective value and maintaining straightforward cash and points alternatives.
