What changed

Connection Credit Union reported that more than 130 formerly incarcerated participants have completed its Banking Beyond Bars program since December 2024. Participants receive education, mentoring, checking and savings accounts, and access to starter credit and auto lending; members who entered without a credit score averaged 686 after one year, and losses have remained minimal.

Loyalty and rewards implications

The program shows how a defined member journey can turn financial inclusion into acquisition, product adoption, referrals and durable loyalty. For banks and credit unions, the transferable lesson is to connect education, accountability, products and milestone recognition in one measurable relationship program.
