PNC completes FirstBank consumer-card migration to PNC Cash Rewards

Development analysis

What changed, why it matters, and what leaders should watch.

What changed

PNC’s FirstBank conversion page states that FirstBank consumer cards are automatically deactivated on September 15 if the replacement PNC Cash Rewards card has not been activated. Unredeemed FirstBank rewards were moved to the PNC Cash Rewards balance on June 25; the replacement card earns 4% back on gas, 3% on dining, 2% on groceries, and 1% on other purchases, subject to the page’s annual category cap.

Loyalty and rewards implications

The final card cutover is a high-risk engagement moment: payment credentials, recurring payments, activation, reward-balance continuity, and digital servicing must all land cleanly to protect spend. Banks and credit unions can treat conversions as managed loyalty journeys, using timely education and activation nudges while measuring wallet provisioning, recurring-payment retention, and spend continuity rather than relying on a broad acquisition incentive.
