SchoolsFirst launches temporary 5% or 5x gas and EV charging rewards

Development analysis

What changed, why it matters, and what leaders should watch.

What changed

On August 11, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union launched a promotion through November 10 that gives eligible cardholders 5% cash back or 5x points on qualifying gas and EV charging purchases, depending on card product. SchoolsFirst says average member card spend on gas is up 15% year over year, versus 5% for non-gas spending, and that about 77,000 members use its cards for gas monthly.

Loyalty and rewards implications

The third-largest U.S. credit union is using its own transaction data to fund a time-boxed, everyday-spend proposition rather than a generic acquisition offer. Cyder can position category campaigns as a controllable way to react to member cost pressure, grow card preference and create measurable reactivation opportunities without permanently changing base rewards economics.
